Heart Health for the Ages



Everyone knows exercising each week keeps the mind, body and soul happy and healthy. However, a new study recently published in the Journal of Physiology found just how much physical activity promotes heart health for the years to come.

As you get older, your body changes. This isn’t news to anyone, but what you may not know is as you age, your arteries begin to stiffen, leading to an increased risk of heart disease. You’ve been told exercise is the best way to combat heart disease as you age, but how much exercise do you need?

In the study published in the Journal of Physiology, The Effect of Lifelong Exercise Frequency on Arterial Stiffness, researchers looked at 102 people older than the age of 60, who had been physically active throughout their lives. Researchers divided the participants into groups depending on how often they exercised: less than two days a week, four to five days a week and six to seven days a week. Then, researchers measured the arterial stiffness of each participant.

Researchers found that two to three days of exercise per week may be sufficient to minimize stiffening of the body’s middle-sized arteries. Middle arteries supply oxygenated blood to the head and neck. However, exercising four to five days per week is the sweet spot; this will keep the body’s larger, central arteries young as well. Central arteries supply blood to both the chest and abdomen.

In a press release, the researchers stated they are hopeful the study with be able to help shape fitness programs. However, more research is required to determine whether diet and societal factors influenced the results.
